Actual design now on Intercity Transit buses

ART on BUSES is a project to place wartime art from the Olympia community on our city's public transit system.

Numerours buses will be showcasing art on interior and exterior signs and travelling throughout the Thurston County area, taking with them the message that our art belongs in the streets

DATES: One month beginning September 18th, 2002.

Why ART on BUSES?

Because we want to promote:

1. The integration of art into our daily lives.

2. The reclaiming of our public spaces. Streets, buses, etc are public domain and do not have to be filled with images that exist to increase corporate profits or to narrow our world view.

3. That art exist outside of just museums and galleries, in places where it can effectively compete against propaganda which we encounter each day. If images must fill the landscape, then they should disseminate culture and reflect who we are, rather than sell us products or benefit small groups of people at the disadvantage of others.

Art can become that creative dialogue urging us to become active participants in our environment, engaged in real issues and in our real-life communities.
